Molecule 01, Our World

C0DE WITHIN: A language only we share.

Twenty years ago, Escentric Molecules introduced an idea that quietly reshaped modern perfumery.

Not through addition, but through subtraction. A single aroma-molecule. Fragrance reduced to its most essential form. Less an exercise in spectacle than an exploration of presence.

What followed reached far beyond perfume. It became a way of recognising one another. Molecule 01 and Escentric 01 found their place on the skin of those who moved through culture on their own terms: artists, musicians, designers, image-makers and independent thinkers. People connected not by aesthetic, profession or scene, but by a shared instinct for what feels authentic.

C0DE WITHIN

Created to mark twenty years of Escentric Molecules, C0DE WITHIN brings together three individuals from different creative worlds: Mayah Alkhateri, Alfie Sibthorpe and Soap Collins. Through conversation, portraiture and movement, each offers a different expression of the same idea.

The molecule remains constant. Everything else shifts.

Throughout the campaign, a subtle coded language surfaces and disappears again. Fragments of a shared system. Signals passed between those who recognise them. What connects these individuals is not a uniform identity, but a common frequency.

C0DE WITHIN unfolds across three chapters, tracing the journey from the individual body to the invisible connections that exist between us.

Molecule 01

Chapter 1: SKIN

C0DE WITHIN opens with SKIN, the first chapter of a three-part exploration of identity, chemistry and community.

Throughout, a subtle coded language surfaces and disappears again. Fragments of a shared system. Signals passed between those who recognise them. What connects these individuals is not a uniform identity, but a common frequency. A belief that self-expression does not require reinvention. That the most compelling things about a person are often the things already there. Twenty years on, Escentric Molecules remains committed to the same proposition it began with:

The scent is not the identity. It is the invisible expression of who you already are.

C0DE WITHIN opens with SKIN, the first chapter of a three-part exploration of identity, chemistry and community.

When the brand launched, it challenged one of perfumery's most established principles: that fragrance is built through composition, structure and narrative. Instead, Escentric Molecules proposed something more radical and stripped back: a fragrance reduced to a single molecule. At its centre was Iso E Super, a synthetic aroma-molecule created in 1973 and long used discreetly within formulations, until perfumer Geza Schoen placed it in isolation and made it the entire story.

Skin

What followed was not simply a new fragrance, but the emergence of a new category of scent. Before skin scent became part of industry language, Molecule 01 was already operating in that space, defined not by projection or complexity, but by proximity, chemistry and perception.

SKIN begins at the closest point of contact between fragrance and wearer. At Escentric Molecules, the skin does not wear the fragrance; it completes it. Skin chemistry, temperature, movement and lived experience shape the final expression in real time, making every encounter entirely individual.

Escentric Molecules

By isolating Iso E Super and allowing it to interact directly with skin, Escentric Molecules shifted attention away from fragrance as composition and towards fragrance as encounter. Molecule 01 reframed fragrance not as something worn to construct identity, but as something that reveals it.

Two decades on, its influence can be seen in the rise of gendelress and minimalist perfumery and the growing cultural appetite for skin scents that prioritise intimacy over projection. Yet Molecule 01 did not follow this movement. It helped pioneer it.

Escentric 01

Created for skin. Not gender.

Twenty years after altering the course of modern perfumery, Escentric Molecules continues to pioneer the art of the skin scent. Unbound by gender and designed to exist in close conversation with the wearer, its fragrances unfold at skin level, melding with individual chemistry to create scents that are intimate, ever-evolving and uniquely personal.

Directed by Services Généraux, styled by Billy Lobos, with makeup by Martina Derosa, hair by Soichi Inagaki, choreography by Benjamin Jonsson, set design by Paulina Piipponen and sound by Tom Hardwick-Allan and Alex McKenzie, C0DE WITHIN reclaims Escentric Molecules' countercultural roots and marks twenty years of the skin scents that redefined what fragrance could be.
