So often fragrance is seen as a performance tool. Focus is placed upon how loud it shouts and how much stamina it has. But if, above all, the success of a fragrance is measured by its projection and longevity, all nuance, complexity, and intrigue gets lost.

In all forms of attraction, perhaps the most compelling facet is always the unseen. It’s the patch of skin left to the imagination that really captures it, and scent is the same. What intrigues us is that unknown factor – the element of surprise, individuality, and good old human biology that unlocks those lizard parts of our brain that we are yet to fully understand. This is the power of skin and the power of scent.

In a world where napalm-like extraits rule, the skin scent still wields humongous power. But a skin scent is not a fragrance that smells like skin. In fact, it’s quite the opposite. A skin scent is a fragrance that simply amplifies the beauty of the skin, boosting one’s natural aroma, providing a means of drawing others in. A fragrance that fulfils that old idiom “your skin, but better”. The skin scent does not aim to replicate the smell of skin, nor does it try to cover the scent with something new. Instead, it simply seeks to enhance the natural odour, blending with the chemistry of the skin to create something unique, addictive, and attractive.

The skin scent revolution started with Molecule 01. This is not conjecture or embellishment. It’s simply a fact.

Molecule 01

It was an innovation of simplicity. In 2006, perfumer Geza Schoen turned a perfumery experiment into an entirely new way of thinking about fragrance. This all happened in the context of more, more, more, where consumers were looking for heavy-hitting fragrances that made a statement purely through size alone. The true power of the skin scent was how it gained attention through beautiful simplicity and subtlety.

Geza Schoen’s fascination had long been the aroma-molecule Iso E Super. Originally developed in 1973 and used as an olfactory booster, Iso E Super boasted a remarkable odour profile. Firstly, it smelled smooth and woody, with a comforting aroma akin to sun-warmed skin. But perhaps more importantly, it had a remarkable ability to play well with other materials, elevating and diffusing them, and providing a sense of space in a composition.

Iso E Super is a textured material. It feels smooth, like soft wood grain. It also feels powdery and full, like cashmere and dust. It’s velvet made scent. Worn alone, Iso E Super has an interesting effect on skin. To the wearer, it smells soft and woody, enveloping them in a calm aura. But to others around the wearer, it creates a magnetising trail that gathers attention quite unlike anything else. It doesn’t wear like a fragrance, because it isn’t a fragrance; it’s a molecule, and because of this, it performs in the most unique of ways.

Some of the most revolutionary ideas in history are the most simple. So simple, in fact, it’s remarkable that they aren’t thought of sooner. For Geza Schoen, the idea was to bottle Iso E Super in isolation and with this stroke of genius, Molecule 01 was born, as was the very idea of the skin scent.

This was a bold move. To take one building block of perfumery – one that is often used as a supporting act and never the main event - and make it the star by placing it front and centre. But boldness often pays off, and Molecule 01 came at the perfect time. In 2006, there were thousands of fragrance launches, but consumers were craving individuality. They wanted a signature scent that nobody else had, but they also wanted subtlety. To stand out by not standing out. Molecule 01 gave them a new way to wear fragrance – a way that felt undeniably individual.

Skin Scents

For Geza Schoen, the skin scent experiment continued beyond Molecule 01. For the next four Molecule fragrances, Schoen amplified the nuanced beauty of Ambroxan (silvery, marine freshness), Vetiveryl Acetate (the intersection of green vetiver and tart grapefruit), Javanol (creamy, transparent sandalwood), and Cashmeran (sunwarmed pine and Mediterranean brush), proving the versatility of the skin scent genre.

Molecule 01 revolutionised the way we think about fragrance. One could spend hours debating whether a single aroma-molecule diluted in alcohol amounts to a fragrance, but the simple truth is this: Molecule 01 is worn and enjoyed as a fragrance by millions. It has graced (and amplified) the skin of millions, and it has had the cultural impact few fragrances do.

It’s the skin scent that started the skin scent revolution.
